Songs & Ballads
Songs and Ballads in the Classical genre are comprised of any composition written for Voice, with the exception of music intended for Opera or Masses. Types of songs include those that are written for the sake of "word painting," i.e. songs that tell a story or help the listener to "paint" images in their mind that coincide with what they hear. Other popular songs include those sung by male and female travelling singers (the Troubador and Trobaritz respectively). The songs typically have a much more subtle instrumentation for the sake of the Voice being the prominent feature of the piece.
