Few generalizations can be drawn about the music of Australasia as a whole. The region has a great number of aboriginal peoples, from the Maori of New Zealand to the Australian aborigines, to the amazingly diverse number of cultures that make up Papua New Guinea. All of these peoples suffered great cultural attrition under colonialism, though many traditional music forms still survive. Much Australasian traditional music is ceremonial, with vocal styles predominating, but the instrumentation ranges from ancient instruments like the didjeridu to guitars and other European instruments which have been absorbed into traditional music performances.
